Anne Hathaway and Rihanna’s Ocean’s 8′ India connection

The stunning Cartier necklace at the centre of the heist in Ocean’s 8 has an India connect — it is inspired by a design crafted in 1931 for the Maharaja of Nawanagar. The original necklace, which belonged to the erstwhile Maharaja of Nawanagar in Jamnagar, Gujarat, featured a 136.25 carat ‘Queen of Holland’ diamond described as the finest cascade of coloured diamonds.

It was designed by Jacques Cartier in 1931 and named ‘The Jeanne Toussaint’ necklace after its then creative director. The original necklace no longer exists as it was dismantled and its diamonds used to create other pieces.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, the film’s necklace was made within the brand’s Paris high jewellery workshop and took around eight weeks to complete.

“While the original jewel no longer exists, within its archives the company preserved a design drawing as well as photographs; the creation sketch was then used as a blueprint for the version seen in the film,” it said.

Of course, it had to be made to fit the neck of a woman.

Anne Hathaway, who plays the role of Daphne Kluger, an insecure film star, wears it in the film, which has Sandra Bullock in the central role of Debbie Ocean.

After her release from prison, Debbie assembles a team of eight to steal the stunning necklace worn by Daphne.

The multi-star film includes Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Indian-origin actor Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina and Helena Bonham Carter.

Directed by Gary Ross, the film released in India today.
